Organize Your Pantry

Here is a simple way to organize your pantry. Get one of those clear plastic shoe storage things that hang on your door. Then you decide what items to put in there - spices, snacks, boxed foods etc. This way you can better see what you have AND there is less chance you will waste (i.e. forget) food!!

I have one of these but currently hang it in the upstairs closet in the guest room. I use if for bills, important papers that need to get taken care of. That way I don't lose things in piles.

Have you tried one of these? How did it work?

Frugal Ideas for Bananas and Yogurt

Bananas were only $0.39 a pound at Kroger last week and you can always find a deal on yogurt between sales, manufacture coupons, online coupons, and coupons you can load onto your Kroger card. If you are wanting to stock up on some of these items but don't want them to go bad before they get eaten, here is a simple way they can be used.

Make a Banana Smoothie

I like to slice up the bananas as soon as I get them and stick them in the freezer. Then, when I am ready to make the smoothie all I do it throw in some yogurt and the frozen banana slices and blend it all up in the blender. It's that easy! And healthy too.

You might want to add sugar, vanilla, other fruits, or even peanut butter. If you have any left over, pour it into an ice tray with toothpicks and now you have frozen yogurt pops for later!

Organic Food

Hey Organic Eaters!! I was reading Living Easy and found out there is an Organic Grocery Deals Forum. Cooool!! I haven't had the chance to explore it yet, so tell me what you think!

What to do with Stale Bread

If you have some stale bread sitting around, don't throw it out yet! OR, buy bread on the day old shelf at the store - it's usually nicely discounted. Try a couple of these things:

Make croutons. First, cut the bread into cubes. Spray with vegetable oil and then sprinkle with Italian or other seasonings. Be sure and package them in an airtight container.

-OR-

Sprinkle the bread with water or milk and wrap it in aluminum foil. Bake it at 350 degrees for about 7-9 minutes to soften it up. French or Italian bread should be baked for 3-5 minutes more, with the foil open for the last few minutes.

Enjoy!

Mmmm.. Garbage Soup

Here is a great frugal recipe that has been previously experimented on by my husband and has proved to be quite tasty.

You know all that leftover food that either a) doesn't get eaten in a couple of days or b) there are just a few green beans (or other food) left that's not worth saving for another meal. Get a bowl and put those extras in that bowl - and then freeze it. Each time you have those leftovers (veggies preferably) pull that bowl out of the freezer and add to it.

What's next?
  • Thaw out that bowl of vegetables and boil it in broth with a couple of bouillon cubes.
  • Add any leftover meat.
  • Pasta and/or beans are good fillers.
  • Throw in some oregano, basil, garlic, and chili powder.
  • Pull it out together with either tomato sauce or ketchup and a couple of teaspoons of butter.

And there you have it - Tasty Garbage Soup

Keep Your Fruit Salad Fresh!

According to a Reader's Digest article, 12% of the food you purchase at the grocery store is wasted. It happens, no matter how hard you try. Well, here is one more way to keep your food lasting longer.

To keep your fruit salad fresh and free of browning add a little lemon juice. Why does this work? Here is the short answer: The ascorbic acid serves as a buffer which prevents oxidation. If you want a longer explanation, click here.

One More Thing....

The last thing I listed at the beginning of the week was on quilting and sewing with floss. I heard that a quick fix if you don't have thread is to sew with floss! Sometimes that is a little more readily accessible when you need to keep a button on your shirt short term.

And quilting...well, this will be a little stalled once again. I am in the process of making a t-shirt quilt. Here is a post on this from a while back. I got a sewing machine from my father-in-law for Christmas and as I was putting all of the pieces together and...I lost a very important screw :(. So I will have to contact the company and get that replaced. So that little story will Be Continued.

Naturally (and cheaply) Heal

Here is yet another experiment that I listed at the beginning of the week. Sorry, these really are more just reports rather than actual experiments. If you try it out, let me know if it works!

..Curing a Headache..
Most of you probably have already gotten a ton of free Excedrin if you are serious shoppers. But if you are lacking in the medicine area or just would like to heal a little more naturally, try this: take a lime, cut it in half, and rub it on your forehead. Hopefully, the throbbing will subside.

..Healing a Burn..
Put some white vinegar liberally on a piece of cotton and dab the burnt area. Try this on sunburns as well.

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor! I have not had the opportunity to try these things myself but have heard about these 'cures' from multiple natural healing sites and word of mouth. Try at your own risk!

A Frugal Temperature

Recycle Your Electronics

Hewlitt Packard has a great recycling program for your computers, printers, cell phones, recharchable batteries and more. Check out this link for FAQ on the subject and this link for the recycling page.

Check the links here and here to learn about Apple's recycling program. When you buy a new computer from them, you can send them your computer (any brand) to be recycled. Or you can buy a prepaid shipping label to recycle your computer and its parts.

Google (or swagbuck) your particular brand of computer and find out if they have a recycling program.

Last year Goodwill handeled over 23 million pounds of computers - and it is very expensive for the company to have them recycled. So, before donating your computer there, I would look into the suggestions listed above. However, many Goodwill's are training their workers to fix some of these computers that they are receiving. Contact your local Goodwill to find out if their workers participate in this type of training. Read an article on this subject here.

Best Buy has a really amazing recycling program. They will recycle old appliances, televisions, cell phones, batteries, printer cartridges, computer and a/v equipment, and more! They also have recycling events all over the country, will give you a gift certificate for recycling gently used items, and gives out a $1500 recycling grants to communities. Click here for more information.

Radio Shack will recycle your rechargeable batteries and cell phones. Find more information here.

Verizon Wireless will take your used cell phones and recharchable batteries. They take the proceeds and use them to financially assist domestic abuse victims. Additionally, the refurbish some of the phones and give them as well as free air time to these victims. It's a great program, check it out here.

Looking For a New Way To Make Some Money?

My dad sent me an article about a woman who wins sweepstake after sweepstake. In fact, she even won two tickets to the Super Bowl! Check out the article here.

Two Frugal Experiments from the Frugal Girl...

Thanks to Frugal Girls! for this guest post. Be sure to check out this mother of two boys and her very informative and cute blog at www.frugalgirls.blogspot.com!

Frugal Experiment #1: Homemade Laundry Stain Remover

I recently ran out of my favorite laundry must-have... Shout Stain Remover! I was committed to find a way to get some effective (but cheaper) stain remover, so I decided to make my own. Yes, I was very skeptical... and thought it probably wouldn't work as well, but I've been using it for two weeks now and the clothes are coming out clean as ever! We're not talking little stains either... I've got two boys that bring home dirt, mud, and grass stains galore. Following is the "recipe" for my new (and successful) frugal experiment: Homemade Laundry Stain Remover...

1/3 cup Dawn Dishsoap
1/3 cup Ammonia
1 cup Water
3 tbsp. baking soda

Mix all ingredients together and store in an empty spray bottle...I'm using my old Shout bottle!

Frugal Experiment #2: Homemade Bubble Bath

The other night I was in a pinch. My youngest child was ready for a bath, but we had ran out of bubbles! I did a quick google search, and came up with a "recipe" for bubble bath... one part kid's tear free shampoo to two parts water. I mixed it up, and it worked like a charm! Another version of the recipe was to substitute softsoap for the tear free shampoo. The homemade bubble bath saved the day... and a few dollars too!
